Oregon Grape

Did you know that Oregon Grape is Oregon’s state flower?  The above photo is of a beautiful Berberis aquifolium in my garden. It is at least 8 feet tall!  The roots contain berberine, the same compound that makes the endangered Goldenseal root so popular.  Oregon Grape root is known to boost the immune system, is beneficial for skin disorders, protects against bacteria and viruses, and much more.  A lesser known fact is that the fresh shoots and berries taste delicious!  They are tart, yet so tasty. I already have plans of making a medicinal Oregon Grape berry mead this autumn…yum!
